The story of Babich Marl SauvB

Babich has been making wine in New Zealand since 1916, when Josip Babich, who came to the Far North kauri gumfields from Croatia as a teenager, made his first wine near the Waitakere Ranges west of Auckland. Four generations of the family now run the business, with vineyards in Auckland, Hawke's Bay and Marlborough.

Babich Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is a clean, fresh, tropical white made in a fuller, riper and softer style that develops well in the bottle. The fruit is harvested from several vineyards around Marlborough, mostly the family's own estates.

The grapes are crushed and pressed, and the juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks at various temperatures to capture Marlborough's fresh flavours. After extensive tastings the winemakers assemble the blend, fine it lightly and bottle it.

Look for passionfruit and grapefruit, with citrus, green tropical notes and a little lime zest, then a mineral edge on the finish. It is a good match for oysters and other seafood, or a plate of grilled fish with a squeeze of lemon.
