The story of Ballantines

Ballantine's began with a grocer's shop. George Ballantine opened it in the Cowgate in Edinburgh in 1827 and sold whiskies there. In 1865 he moved to a larger shop in Glasgow, where he began experimenting with his own blends. Queen Victoria granted the firm a Royal Warrant in 1895, and Ballantine's Finest, still the flagship, was launched in 1910.

It is a blend of many single malts and grain whiskies, with the whiskies from Miltonduff and Glenburgie forming the backbone of the recipe. The brand is now owned by Chivas Brothers, part of Pernod Ricard, which acquired it in 2005. The strength is 40 per cent alcohol by volume.

Difford's Guide describes it as deep golden amber, with malted barley, milk chocolate, green apple, vanilla fudge and a little warm spice on the palate, finishing lightly salty. In 2021 it was the world's second best selling Scotch whisky, behind Johnnie Walker.

Pour it neat or with a splash of water to open it up. For a longer drink it takes ginger ale well, with plenty of ice and a wedge of lime.
