The story of Badger Tangle Foot 500B
Tangle Foot is brewed by Hall & Woodhouse, the Dorset family brewery that Charles Hall founded in 1777 as the Ansty Brewery. In 1847 his son went into business with George Woodhouse, a former head brewer, and the firm is now based at Blandford St Mary and still run as a family business.
It is a top-fermented golden ale, 5% in the bottle and a little lighter on cask. Challenger and Goldings hops give a subtle floral note, while the fermentation adds hints of melon and pear. The taste is bitter but balanced, with malty aromas behind it. The name has a tale attached: the story goes that the head brewer drank several tankards and fell on it.
A cool glass, rather than an ice-cold one, shows off the hops. It suits fish and chips, a ploughman's lunch built around mature cheddar, or a roast chicken dinner.
