The story of Church Rd Grand Res HB Chard

The Church Road site in Hawke's Bay was established in 1897 by Bartholomew Steinmetz, a Luxembourg émigré who made wine for the Marist Brothers' mission, now Mission Estate. From 1921 it was shaped by Tom McDonald, who started by washing recycled bottles at the age of 14, leased and ran the business within five years, and bought it about a decade later. The winery's finest TOM wines carry his name.

Grand Reserve Chardonnay sits just below the TOM Chardonnay in the range. In the 2014, the grapes came from two vineyards the winery rates among its best and were picked by hand. The bunches were whole-bunch pressed and the juice went straight to barrel, with no settling beforehand. Wild yeast fermented it in barrel, and it stayed in oak for about 11 months.

That method shows in the glass. Lemon-yellow with gold, it smells of vanilla, biscuit and lemon, with hazelnut and nutmeg from the oak and a bready, leesy depth, and the palate is rich but fresh, with citrus, white peach and a hint of minerality.

Keep it cool rather than icy, and pour it with shellfish, roast chicken or a creamy pasta.
