The story of De Kuyper Triple Sec
De Kuyper Triple Sec is made by De Kuyper Royal Distillers in Schiedam, the Netherlands, a family company that began in 1695 when Petrus De Kuyper and Anna Custers opened a cooperage in Horst. The family turned to gin in 1752 with the purchase of a Schiedam distillery, and the distillery it still uses in the town came into use in 1911.
Liqueurs came later. De Kuyper started making them in 1920, and by the 1930s it was producing nearly twenty varieties, triple sec among them. Since 2013 the oranges that flavour this one have been distilled in neutral spirit in copper pot stills, rather than relying on bought in essence. It is a clear liqueur at 40 per cent, with a zesty orange aroma and a light sweetness.
Triple sec is a mixing liqueur, and the margarita is its best known job. The official recipe is 50 ml tequila, 20 ml triple sec and 15 ml fresh lime juice, shaken with ice and strained into a chilled glass, with an optional half salt rim.
