The story of Drambuie

Drambuie is a Scotch whisky liqueur with a story that starts on the Isle of Skye. The brand's own account says the recipe came to Britain with Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745 and was passed to Clan MacKinnon as thanks for helping him after Culloden, though historians treat that as a sales story. What is on record is that John Ross of the Broadford Hotel on Skye received the recipe, and his son James refined it on a Scotch whisky base and registered the name Drambuie in 1893.

Production moved to Edinburgh, and in 1914 Malcolm MacKinnon and Georgina Davidson founded the Drambuie Liqueur Company. William Grant & Sons bought the brand in 2014. The recipe is kept in a safe at the blending facility near Glasgow, and only three people know it.

It is made from aged Scotch whisky, heather honey, herbs and spices, and bottled at 40% alcohol by volume. The name comes from the Gaelic an dram buidheach, the drink that satisfies. The honey sweetness comes first, then herbal warmth over the whisky.

Serve it neat or over ice after dinner. The classic mixed drink is the Rusty Nail, Drambuie with Scotch whisky over ice. It also works well alongside coffee, chocolate and cream desserts.
