The story of Drumshanbo Fig & Laurel

Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin with Italian Fig & Laurel is made by The Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo, County Leitrim, founded by PJ Rigney on the shores of Lough Allen. Distilling began on 21 December 2014, when the Rigneys and their team laid down the first whiskey made in the province of Connacht in over a century. The Shed now makes gin, vodka and Single Pot Still whiskey on the same site.

This edition is a collaboration with Italian bartender Bruno Vanzan, a two-time world champion mixologist. It starts from the distillery's gunpowder gin, which brings together oriental botanicals, gunpowder tea and fresh citrus in copper pot stills, then adds Italian viola fig, laurel and Tuscan juniper.

Expect fig jam and orange peel on the nose, then stone fruit and a herbal, juniper-led finish. The distillery's own serve is the Bella Fizz: four parts gin, one part lemon juice and three quarters of a part simple syrup, topped with soda and garnished with mint and lemon. A gin and tonic with a wedge of lime is the other obvious choice.
