The story of Galliano Vanilla Liqueur

Galliano was created in 1896 by the distiller Arturo Vaccari and named after Giuseppe Galliano, an Italian army officer from the First Italo-Ethiopian War. It is distilled at Maraschi & Quirici in Chieri, in the foothills of the Alps near Turin, in two small copper pot stills of under 100 litres each that are used only for Galliano. The tall, tapered bottle was inspired by the columns of ancient Roman temples, and the brand is now owned by the Dutch distiller Lucas Bols.

Galliano Vanilla keeps the heart of Galliano L'Autentico, including Mediterranean anise, peppermint and cinnamon, then adds a fragrant vanilla distillate on top. At 30% alcohol it is lighter than the original, which is 42.3%.

The liqueur is golden yellow, with creamy vanilla up front, then peppermint, sweet liquorice and herbal notes and a peppery finish. It is the base of the Galliano Hot Shot, which layers hot coffee and whipped cream over the liqueur as an after-dinner treat, and it also goes into a Vanilla Mule, an Espresso Martini or a Golden Cadillac.
