A traditional London Dry Gin with juniper and citrus, finishing dry. Suited to a gin and tonic.
Gordon's has deep roots in London. Alexander Gordon's distillery moved from Southwark to Clerkenwell in 1786, and the gin travelled the world on Royal Navy ships. The label carries a wild boar, tied to a Clan Gordon legend, and a square green bottle for the UK market arrived in 1904. The Royal Warrant followed in 1925, and Gordon's opened its first American distillery in Linden, New Jersey, in 1934.
The exact recipe has stayed a closely held secret. Juniper leads, with coriander, angelica and liquorice behind it, which gives a dry, classic London style. Strength varies by market, and the bottle sold in New Zealand and Australia is 37%, a little lower than the 40% found in the United States and Canada.
That quiet, juniper first profile suits a straightforward gin and tonic: plenty of ice, a good tonic and a thick slice of lime or lemon. Gordon's is also named in the Vesper, the martini James Bond orders in Casino Royale, published in 1953, and it works in a dry martini or a Tom Collins.
