Malt & grainCitrusCreamGrey Goose began in 1997 as an idea from American importer Sidney Frank, who wanted a vodka that looked and felt like a French luxury spirit. He turned to François Thibault, the cellar master at a Cognac house, who developed the recipe. Frank sold the brand to Bacardi in 2004.
The vodka starts with soft winter wheat grown in Picardy, in northern France. The grain is distilled near Paris, and the spirit then travels south to Cognac, where it is blended with water from a limestone-lined spring and bottled on site. The bottle is closed with a cork stopper rather than a screw cap, and the vodka is bottled at 40%.
It is a clean, restrained vodka, so it rewards simple drinks. A tall glass of soda with a wedge of lime over ice lets the spirit speak, a screwdriver with fresh orange juice is easy and honest, and a dry martini with a twist of lemon shows off the smooth texture. Keep the bottle in the fridge or freezer and the drinks stay crisp.
