The story of Hogshead Shiraz

Hogshead Shiraz is made by Jim Zerella in McLaren Vale, South Australia, as part of a partnership with Nicholas Crampton. Zerella makes and matures the wines himself, using fruit from established dry-grown vineyards in central South Australia and from low-yielding vineyards in McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley.

The grapes are destemmed and given a long, cool maceration with regular pumping over. The wine is then matured in three ways: in stainless steel, to keep the aromatics and fruit bright, in seasoned French and American oak for three months, and in 300 litre French hogshead barrels. Those barrels give the wine its name and add body and complexity. It comes in at 14% and under screwcap.

Poured, it shows a vibrant deep purple. Dark fruit, ripe plum and sweet smoked spice lift off the glass, and the palate fills with blue fruits and boysenberry, violets and exotic spice, with fine tannins and savoury oak behind them. The finish is long and dry.

The makers point to barbecued red meats and other big flavours. Steak, lamb chops and good sausages off the grill are all in that territory.
