Invivo is an Auckland wine company started by two old school friends, winemaker Rob Cameron and Tim Lightbourne. Its Pinot Gris is a Marlborough wine, and the winery has now made more than a decade of vintages of it.
The wine leans on the soft, rounded side of the grape rather than the zippy side. The nose is perfumed with pear and quince, and the palate is dominated by sweet pear and fig, with some stone fruit and a floral lift. The texture is silky and the body fuller than you might expect from a 12.5 per cent white, with enough acidity to keep the finish fresh.
That weight makes it a good partner for food with a little richness. Try it with roast chicken, a pork and apple dish, or a creamy seafood pasta, and keep it well chilled. It also sits comfortably beside a soft washed rind cheese, where the fig and quince notes pick up the fruit on the plate.
