The story of Johnnie Walker Dbl Black

Johnnie Walker began in 1820, when John Walker opened a grocery shop in Kilmarnock, Scotland. His son Alexander and grandson, also Alexander, built the whisky into a popular brand, and the striding man on the label was drawn by the cartoonist Tom Browne in 1909. Diageo owns it today. Double Black went on general release in 2011, after first being sold in travel retail.

It starts from Black Label, the 12 year old blend, and pushes the smoke further. Whiskies matured in heavily charred oak casks are blended with malts from Scotland's west coast, chosen for their naturally smoky character. It is bottled at 40 per cent. Expect sweet smoke and cloves on the nose, then peat smoke running through raisins and sultanas, with apple, pear, orange zest, vanilla and spice. The finish is long and warming.

Pour a measure into a tumbler and add a small splash of water, which opens up the spice and smoke. Start with a few drops and add more to taste.
