The story of Martini Rosso
Martini Rosso goes back to 1863, when Luigi Rossi created the original Martini recipe. The house name pairs him with Alessandro Martini, a wine merchant, and the vermouth is still made at Pessione di Chieri, near Turin in northern Italy. Bacardi has owned the company since 1993.
Rosso is a sweet red vermouth, bottled at 15 per cent. The base is wine blended with sugar, alcohol and botanicals, and the house uses more than 40 botanicals across its vermouths. Martini names sage, savory and dittany among the herbs in Rosso, together with bitter-sweet exotic woods. The result is deep red, sweet and herbal, with the bitter edge that makes vermouth work as an aperitivo.
The simplest serve is 75 ml over ice with a garnish. For an Americano, build 35 ml Rosso, 35 ml bitter and 70 ml soda over ice in a tumbler, stir gently and add a slice of orange. It also suits the aperitivo table, with olives, salted almonds, or a board of salami, cured ham and pecorino.
