BlackcurrantOakThis is Cabernet Sauvignon and nothing else. Mills Reef makes its Elspeth Cabernet Sauvignon from a single Gimblett Gravels vineyard in Hawke's Bay, using low yielding vines, and only releases it under the Elspeth label when the quality is there.
The 2020 season suited the grape well, with steady hot days and moderate to cool nights giving even ripening. The grapes were gently crushed with some berries left whole, then put into open top fermenters for a four day cold soak. Fermentation used a selected yeast alongside some natural yeast, and the cap was rummaged with air each day to draw out colour, flavour and fine tannin. An extended soak on the skins followed before the wine went into French oak, 35 per cent new, for 26 months. It finishes at 13.5 per cent alcohol and is sealed under screwcap.
Expect a dark, brooding wine with blackcurrant, aniseed and mocha, and cedar, black olive and dark chocolate as it opens up. The tannins are silky and the wine is drinking well now, with room to develop through 2035.
Lamb, venison or a thick steak off the grill are the obvious partners.
