What it tastes like

Honeyed pear · apple · spice

Honeycomb, spicy pears and apples and baked quince pie. This gorgeous Pinot Gris is a country larder of aromas. A fine phenolic structure and lively acidity pull this wine together, avoiding the sometimes flabby constitution which can afflict so many new world Gris. A textural wine at the start of its evolution. It isn't noticeably sweet but is a serious, rich wine already exhibiting lovely balance. Listed in the 2019 Fine Wines of New Zealand list.

The story of Neudorf Home Block P/Gris

When Tim and Judy Finn started Neudorf in Upper Moutere in 1978, little was known about basic viticulture in New Zealand, so they planted many varieties to see what worked. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Pinot Gris all stuck. This Pinot Gris comes from the Home Block around the winery, a north facing slope of clay and gravel soils.

The vineyard is dry farmed and BioGro organic, and the vines are a mix of clones that includes the old Mission selection. The fruit is hand harvested and gently pressed, then fermented with wild yeast, part in neutral oak puncheons and part in clay amphorae. Malolactic is only partial, and the wine is made without fining.

The aim is texture rather than fruit sweetness. Nashi pear leads, followed by honeycomb, citrus peel and a little white pepper and cardamom, with a chalky line and gentle grip that give it a savoury, umami edge. The winery points to Moroccan tagine or punchy Southeast Asian dishes, and it also works with roast pork or mussels in a spiced broth.
