The story of Glenlivet Founders Res

The Glenlivet was founded in 1824 by George Smith in the Glenlivet valley, in Scotland's Speyside region. After the Excise Act of 1823, Smith took out a licence and became the first licensed distiller in the Livet valley. In 1884 a High Court ruling gave the Smith family sole use of the name "The Glenlivet" for whisky from the distillery, and other distilleries could only use Glenlivet alongside their own name. Chivas Brothers, part of Pernod Ricard, owns it today.

Founder's Reserve is a no age statement single malt that sits in the core range as a tribute to Smith's aim of a smooth style. It is drawn from traditional oak casks and a higher share of first fill American oak, which adds creaminess and sweetness. Master Distiller Alan Winchester describes delicate citrus on the nose, then zesty orange and toffee with the classic Glenlivet pear, and a long, creamy finish. It is pale gold and bottled at 40%.

Take it neat or over ice. The distillery's own highball is simple: two parts whisky to four parts soda or ginger beer over ice, with a lemon wheel or a sprig of rosemary.
