The story of Thorn Clarke Shotfire Shiraz

Thorn-Clarke is a family winery in the Barossa built from two families. On one side are viticulturists who settled on a fruit farm in the 1870s and have grown grapes for six generations. On the other is a family linked to the region's first gold mine. David and Cheryl Clarke bought their first property, Kabininge near Tanunda, in 1987 and started planting. They sold fruit to neighbouring winemakers for more than a decade before making their own wine, beginning with small batches of Shiraz from the 1998 vintage.

Shotfire is the range that carries the mining story. A shotfirer was the miner who set and lit the charges that opened up gold veins, and the name honours an ancestor of the family. The winery describes the style as essentially Barossan, with a rich, deep range of flavours. This Shiraz is matured in oak for over a year.

Expect blackcurrant and mulberry fruit, smoky oak, a touch of clove and dark chocolate, with firm tannins and a lingering finish.

It is a wine for grilled meats and barbecued vegetables, and it handles strong cheese well. A char grilled rib eye or slow cooked beef cheek is where it sits happily.
