The story of Woodstock Black

Woodstock is a New Zealand bourbon and cola brand made by Independent Liquor. Black is the premium line in the range, and this pack is the 7 per cent version in ten 330ml cans. The full name on the can is Woodstock Black 4 Year Blend and Cola.

The point of difference is the bourbon. It is four years old and aged in charred American oak, then mixed with an old style cola. Bourbon is a tightly defined spirit: it has to be made in the United States from a grain mash that is at least 51 per cent corn, and it has to be aged in new charred oak containers. Woodstock says its spirit is made from corn and other grains with limestone filtered water, so the cola is working with a spirit that has spent real time in wood.

Serve the cans well chilled, straight from the can or over ice in a glass. A wedge of lime is an easy garnish. Ten cans make a sensible pack for a barbecue.
