The story of Yellow Tail Shiraz

Yellow Tail is made by the Casella family at Yenda in the Riverina region of New South Wales. Filippo and Maria Casella emigrated from Sicily to Australia in 1957, and the family winery was founded in 1969. John Casella then built the Yellow Tail brand around wine that is easy to choose and easy to drink. The name comes from the yellow-footed rock wallaby, the animal on the label.

The brand draws on the family's own vineyard at Griffith in the Riverina and on other vineyards across South Eastern Australia. The Shiraz is a soft, fruit-forward red, with blackberry and red berry flavours and a little vanilla and spice, and it is made to be approachable straight away rather than to be cellared.

Serve it at cool room temperature. It is made for the barbecue, so lamb chops, beef ribs, sausages and burgers all suit it, and it is just as good with a beef stew, a pepperoni pizza or a block of aged cheddar.
