The story of 19 Crimes Hard Chard

The woman on the 19 Crimes Hard Chard label is Jane Castings, a domestic servant and mother of four young children who was convicted in 1846 of receiving cheese and bacon she knew had been stolen. She is one of the convicts the brand puts on its labels. 19 Crimes is a Treasury Wine Estates brand that launched in 2012, and Hard Chard is its Chardonnay.

The wine is 100% Chardonnay from South Eastern Australia, and oak plays a big part. It sees significant oak influence during production, which suits its deep, rich golden colour and toasty character. On the nose there are ripe stone fruit and peach with toasty oak and honey, and the palate adds butterscotch and oak spice over a sweet, textured mouthfeel. The finish is creamy, with vanilla and a trace of stone fruit.

That weight calls for food with some richness of its own. Roast chicken in a butter and herb sauce, a creamy mushroom risotto, pork with a stone fruit glaze or crab with drawn butter all sit well alongside it, and so does a slice of aged Gruyère or Comté.
