The story of 19 Crimes Shiraz

19 Crimes is a wine brand from Treasury Wine Estates, the Australian company that also owns Penfolds. The name looks back at the British convicts who were sentenced to transportation to Australia, which began in 1787, and at the 19 crimes that could earn that sentence. Many convicts did not survive the voyage. Those who did became colonists and helped build a new country.

The brand tells those stories through its labels. Scan the QR code on the back of the bottle, point your phone at the front label, and the convict pictured on it comes to life in augmented reality.

The Shiraz is labelled South Eastern Australia and is 13.5% alcohol. It is full-bodied and rich, with raspberry, dark plum and vanilla and a touch of spice, and it finishes smooth rather than sharp. It suits steak and a board of cured meats.
