The story of Babydoll Marl S/Blanc

Babydoll is a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from Yealands Estate, the winery Peter Yealands established in 2008 at Seddon. The estate holds over 1,000 hectares in the Awatere Valley, uses sheep and chickens to manage weeds and pests, has built wetlands and runs a large solar array.

The name comes from the miniature Babydoll sheep that graze between the vines all year. They are too short to reach the canopy, so they work as natural lawnmowers. The grapes come from Yealands vineyards in the Awatere and Wairau Valleys.

The winemaking is deliberately clean. The fruit is pressed gently, settled cold in stainless steel for 48 hours, then fermented cool to keep the wine crisp and aromatic. Recent releases show citrus blossom, green herbal notes, blackcurrant leaf and a saline finish.

Serve it well chilled. It suits fresh oysters, steamed mussels, grilled white fish and green salads, and it makes a crisp glass on its own before dinner.
