CherryStone fruitWarm spiceBogle Merlot is an easy-going California red with a plush, round entry and supple red fruit. Cherry leads, with black currant, mocha and a little tobacco behind it, and the tannins are soft.
Merlot is a child of Cabernet Franc, as researchers at UC Davis showed, and its earliest record is from Bordeaux in 1784, under the name Merlau. Bogle draws Merlot from vineyards across California, among them sites in Clarksburg, Suisun Valley, Sonoma, Livermore Valley and Lodi.
Every block of grapes is crushed, fermented and aged on its own, so each vineyard's character can be followed, and every Bogle red goes into small oak barrels. The barrel room holds more than 95,000 of them.
Pour it with margherita pizza, aged white cheddar, or chorizo pizza with peppers and Manchego. Bogle's own recipe pairings also include eggplant parmesan pizza and caldo verde, a Portuguese kale and potato soup.
