The story of Bogle Old Vine Zinfandel

Bogle Old Vine Zinfandel starts with a core of Zinfandel from vines that are 60 to 80 years old. The vines are head-trained and the fruit is picked by hand, from old vineyards in Lodi and Amador County in California.

Zinfandel is the same variety as Italy's Primitivo, and it has been grown in California since the 1850s, when it travelled west with nurserymen and Gold Rush migrants. Lodi has some of the oldest Zinfandel vines in the state and tends to give juicy wines, while Amador leans towards bigger, brambly ones.

The wine is aged in American oak. It smells of forest berries, raspberries and cranberries with black pepper and baking spice, and the palate adds sour cherry, marionberry pie and a little toasted coconut from the oak.

It handles hearty food well. Bogle suggests fennel-crusted rack of lamb, and wood-fired pizza, pasta in a red sauce, or grilled meats and vegetables are all good company.
