The story of Broken Shed Vodka

Broken Shed is a New Zealand vodka made in the mountains near Lake Wanaka. The brand began with two explorers drinking in a rustic shed on the lake who decided to make a vodka of their own.

The spirit starts as whey, the liquid left over from New Zealand's dairy industry. Because whey is already liquid, no water is added at the distilling stage, and the spirit is distilled three times. It is then blended with two waters: mineral-rich aquifer water from the South Island's Southern Alps, said to be about 15,000 years old, and filtered spring water from the North Island. Water makes up about 60 per cent of the bottle. That gives a vodka with three ingredients, two of them water, and no additives, not even the citric acid some vodkas carry.

This litre bottle is 40 per cent alcohol. The whey base gives a smooth, clean spirit that suits a very cold martini with olives, a vodka mule in a copper mug, or a simple long drink with soda and a squeeze of lime.
