HoneyCrisp appleVanilla & caramelOakBushmills 10 Year Old is a single malt, which sets it apart from Bushmills Original and Black Bush, both of which carry grain whiskey. The distillery sits on the County Antrim coast, was rebuilt quickly after a fire destroyed the original buildings in 1885, and calls this bottle the pioneering Irish single malt.
It is a marriage of single malts, each aged for at least 10 years, in former bourbon barrels and sherry butts. Bottled at 40 per cent, it pours amber gold.
The nose opens with bright citrus and the honey character the distillery is known for, then fresh vanilla and creamy milk chocolate. The palate is mellow, with honeysuckle and a light touch of toasted oak, and the finish is crisp and fades gently.
Bushmills suggests drinking it neat, with ice, or with a small splash of still water. It is gentle enough that one large cube is all it needs, and it sits well beside a wedge of mature cheddar or a ripe pear.
