The story of Church Rd McDonald PinotG
This Pinot Gris comes from Church Road's Matapiro Vineyard on the Crownthorpe Terraces, the winery's highest and most inland site in Hawke's Bay. Bigger swings between warm days and cool nights up there help build aroma and keep the acidity fresh.
The wine belongs to the McDonald Series, which honours Tom McDonald (1907 to 1987), the Hawke's Bay winemaker who raised the standard of the region's wines. The winery introduced the series in 2012 and placed it between its regular and reserve ranges.
It is a fuller style than most Pinot Gris. Wild yeast ferments the juice and the wine rests on its lees, which adds texture and subtle complexity. In the glass look for poached pear, stone fruit, rose petal and ginger, with medium sweetness on a full, powerful palate.
That richness suits spiced food. Try a Thai green curry, pork belly with ginger, or a creamy chicken dish, and serve it cool rather than ice cold so the texture comes through.
