The story of Church Rd McDonald Syrah

The McDonald Series Syrah is grown at Church Road's Redstone Vineyard in the Bridge Pa Triangle, one of the warmest sites in Hawke's Bay and well suited to later ripening varieties. Syrah from there is typically ripe and supple, with red and black fruit and a floral lift.

The series is named for Tom McDonald. In 1921, at fourteen, he started washing recycled bottles at the winery. Within five years he was leasing and running the business, and about a decade later he bought it outright. In 1949 he made what is recorded as New Zealand's first commercial Cabernet Sauvignon there.

Rich plum and berry fruit is lifted by fragrant spice, violet and liquorice, and the palate is medium weight and supple with a long finish. It already drinks well, and the winery expects it to age gracefully for about ten years after the vintage.

Charred beef short ribs or a mushroom and thyme pie make a good partner, and a plain roast chicken with plenty of black pepper works too.
