The story of Devils Staircase PinotN

Devil's Staircase is the Central Otago Pinot Noir label from Rockburn. Rockburn began in the early 1990s, when Dunedin surgeon Richard Bunton planted a three-hectare hobby block at Lake Hayes. The first label was Hay's Lake, with its first vintage in 1998, and it became Rockburn after a new vineyard was established at Parkburn. The name refers to the rugged, rock-strewn, burn-scarred landscape. Winemaker Malcolm Rees-Francis, who was an assistant winemaker at Felton Road earlier in his career, makes the wines.

The Devil's Staircase name comes from the winding road between Queenstown and Kingston along Lake Wakatipu. No commercial wine region in the world lies further south, and Pinot Noir accounts for more than 80% of the vines planted there. Its continental climate has big swings in temperature, and harvest starts in mid to late April. The fruit for this label is picked by hand.

Pinot Noir from the region typically shows cherry, raspberry and strawberry, and Rockburn describes this wine as bold and rich, with dark plum and bramble fruit. Light tannins keep it easy to drink, so it suits roast chicken or a mushroom dish.
