The story of Explorer C/Otago P/Noir

Explorer is the Central Otago Pinot Noir from Domaine Thomson, a single vineyard at Lowburn owned by the Hall-Jones family. PM and David Hall-Jones signed the contract to buy the land during a 2000 visit to Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy, and the domaine is now entering its 25th year.

The vineyard covers 14 hectares, planted as four blocks called North Block, the Terraces, South Block and Moon Block. The soils are friable, semi-arid loess over glacial moraine, with deep gravel on the terraces. Biodynamic practices came in during 2013, and the vineyard has been certified organic by BioGro since 2014. The fruit for Explorer is handpicked, and the wines are made by Dean Shaw.

The style is elegant but concentrated, with bright acidity and fine tannins. Look for sweet cherry, a note of light clay and thyme, and a tart edge of rhubarb and cranberry, followed by a fresh finish.

That tart fruit makes it a good partner for roast pork with a rhubarb or plum sauce. It also suits baked beetroot with goat's curd, or grilled quail with thyme.
