The story of Gibbston Valley Gold River P/N

Gibbston Valley is one of the founding names of Central Otago wine. Alan Brady, a former journalist from Northern Ireland, planted 500 vines at the home vineyard in 1981, and the first commercial wine followed in 1987. Gibbston is the coolest, highest part of the region, and its marginal climate made it risky to rely on one site, so the winery grew elsewhere. Most of its vineyards now sit at Bendigo, about 40 hectares across four terraces at different altitudes.

Gold River is the label made for early drinking. The fruit is handpicked and fermented in small batches, then aged in French oak. The result is a deeply coloured Pinot Noir with fragrant red and dark fruit and a palate of intense fruit and spice. It is made to be enjoyed young, though it will keep for three to five years.

Expect bright cherry and raspberry, a little dried thyme and a trace of woodsmoke. Serve it a touch cooler than the living room, around 13 to 14 degrees, to keep the fruit lively. Pork sausages on lentils, a wild mushroom pie or a tray of roast root vegetables all suit its juicy, rounded style.
