The story of Johnny Q Shiraz
Johnny Q is the label of John Quarisa, an Australian winemaker who spent years making wine for large producers, including McWilliam's, Casella and Nugan Estate, before starting a family business with his wife Josephine in 2005. Quarisa Wines buys grapes from New South Wales and South Australia and makes its wine in leased space. The wines are now exported to around fifteen markets, New Zealand among them.
The Shiraz is the label's generous, easy-going red. Recent releases use South Australian fruit and show black and red berries, violets and a touch of resiny vanilla, finishing with a hint of mocha. It is medium to full bodied and dense with dark fruit, and it comes under screwcap, so there is no corkscrew to hunt for.
It is made for the barbecue. A thick steak is the obvious partner, and sausages, lamb chops or a rack of pork ribs do just as well. Pour it with a little air and at a slightly cool room temperature, and let the mocha finish carry through the last of the meal.
