The story of Kahurangi Sauv Blanc

Kahurangi Estate is based in Upper Moutere, about 33 kilometres from Nelson city, on a site where vines were first planted in 1973. Greg and Amanda Day bought the existing vineyard in 1998 and built the Kahurangi brand, and the brand and its distribution business were later bought by senior staff and another couple. In Māori, kahurangi means a treasured possession, and it is also the name for a prized, flawless greenstone.

Alongside its Nelson wines, Kahurangi makes wines from other regions, and this Sauvignon Blanc is from Marlborough. The company buys fruit from growers and has the wines made by contract winemakers to its direction. Marlborough is the heartland of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Large commercial vineyards were first planted there in 1973, and Cloudy Bay's 1985 vintage brought the style international attention.

The wine is bright and aromatic, with passionfruit, lime and fresh herb flavours and a crisp finish. Serve it well chilled with oysters, mussels, pan-fried fish, a green salad or a goat's cheese tart.
