PassionfruitCitrusKim Crawford launched in 1996 in Auckland. It was started by husband and wife Kim and Erica Crawford as a virtual brand, buying grapes and renting winemaking space. The brand was sold to Vincor in 2003, and Constellation Brands acquired Vincor in 2006.
The Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is the wine the brand is known for. Chief winemaker Dave Edmonds blends fruit from vineyards across Marlborough's subregions, which he divides into six: Rarangi, Southern Valleys, Awatere, Upper Wairau, Rapaura and Lower Wairau. Drawing on that many sites lets the winemaking team keep the house style steady from year to year.
The wine is pale straw with lemon hues. It has lifted aromas of passionfruit and guava with citrus, crushed herbs and a wet stone note, and a palate of passionfruit, melon and grapefruit with lively acidity and a long finish.
Serve it well chilled. It suits steamed mussels, fresh oysters and summer salads.
