The story of Malfy Originale Gin

Malfy Originale is a classic dry gin from Piedmont, distilled by Torino Distillati at Moncalieri, just outside Turin. The gin reached the United States in March 2016. The brand draws on the Amalfi Coast for its identity, and the maker describes Originale as a blend of hand-picked juniper and sun-ripened Italian lemons.

The base is an Italian winter wheat spirit, flavoured with Italian juniper and five other botanicals, with coriander, cassia and angelica among them. The distillers, Beppe Ronco and Denis Muni, run it through a stainless steel vacuum still, which lowers the boiling point so the delicate citrus and herbal notes stay fresh. It is then cut with water from Monviso and bottled at 41 per cent.

The taste is crisp and clean, with piney juniper first, a lemon edge, and a dry, slightly salty finish. Because it is a straightforward dry style with a bright citrus lift, it suits long drinks best. Serve it ice cold over plenty of ice with tonic, ginger beer or lemonade, and garnish with a wedge or twist of lemon.
