The story of Matawhero Pinot Gris

Chardonnay is Gisborne's main grape and Gewurztraminer is the one Matawhero built its name on, which makes its Pinot Gris a quieter achievement. The fruit comes from the Briant vineyard, where silty clay soils and a coastal climate bring the grapes to full ripeness while keeping their natural acidity.

Picking is by hand on cool autumn mornings so the fruit arrives at the winery fresh. It is pressed gently, the juice is cleared cool, and fermentation happens slowly in stainless steel with an aromatic yeast chosen to protect the delicate aromatics of the grape. Beyond that the winemaking is minimal, and the wine is simply stabilised, filtered and bottled under screwcap. The alcohol sits at 13.5 per cent.

In the glass it is water white with a hint of green and gold. Lychee, nashi pear, almond and a touch of honeysuckle lead on the nose, and the palate follows with ripe nashi pear, lychee and a little spice. The finish is crisp and dry, with enough weight to feel full in the mouth.

That mix suits food well. Try it with sushi, an Asian style pork salad, or grilled white fish finished with fresh herbs.
