The story of Mishas Highnote P/Noir

Misha's Vineyard calls Pinot Noir its jewel in the crown, and the wine carries the name The High Note, inspired by an opera-singing mother and an early life spent in the theatre. The vineyard sits on the edge of Lake Dunstan in the Bendigo sub-region of Central Otago, on north-west facing terraces that catch the sun for much of the day.

The estate is a single vineyard of 57 hectares, planted from 2004 and rising from about 210 to 350 metres. Its approach is described as no compromise, which in practice means exacting work in the vines, hand picking and a considered hand in the cellar. The Pinot Noir ferments with natural yeast and is matured in French oak, with only a modest share new.

In the glass it is dark ruby, with wild thyme, rose-hip, red fruit and a touch of white spice. The palate is sweet-fruited but held together by a mineral purity, and the winery says it will cellar for several years.

It is a versatile table wine. The winery suggests lamb, venison and veal, vegetable dishes with mushrooms, and game birds such as quail, pheasant and duck.
