The story of Momo Pinot Noir

Momo is the second label of Seresin Estate in Marlborough. Seresin was founded in 1992 by Michael Seresin, a New Zealand cinematographer whose film credits include Midnight Express and Angela's Ashes, and its first wine came from the 1996 vintage. Momo is a Māori word for offspring, which suits a younger sibling to the estate wines. The fruit is organically grown, from Seresin's own vineyards and from growers in the region.

The vines sit on well-drained alluvial and silty clay soils. The grapes are destemmed and given a cold maceration before fermentation, then ferment in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged mostly in old French oak on its lees and bottled with minimal filtration, so the oak is a background note rather than a flavour.

Red cherry, raspberry and plum lead, with violet and a little clove, and the texture is silky with fresh acidity and fine tannins. Serve it at 14 to 16 degrees, a touch below room temperature. Roast duck breast with cherries, grilled salmon, a herbed pork chop and wild mushroom risotto all suit it.
