The Brysons moved to Padthaway in 1955 as farmers and graziers, and they went on to plant vines in the 1990s. Morambro Creek was established as a winery in 1994, and Shiraz is now the biggest block on the estate, around 88 hectares of 178.
Padthaway sits on the Limestone Coast in the south-east of South Australia, and the estate's terra rossa soil over limestone drains freely. The vineyard is managed for low yields and small bunches, which concentrates the flavour. The Shiraz is matured with about 35% new oak, a mix of French and American barrels, and it comes in at 14.5% alcohol.
It is full-bodied yet approachable, with ripe dark berry fruit, a little spice and smooth tannins.
Put it next to a barbecue. Lamb chops, rump steak or sausages with a sticky glaze suit it, as does a hearty beef stew on a wet night.
