The story of Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir

Pegasus Bay is a family winery in the Waipara Valley, North Canterbury, about 60 kilometres north of Christchurch. Ivan and Christine Donaldson founded it in 1986 on a north-facing terrace, and their sons run it today, with Matthew as winemaker since the early 1990s. The estate covers around 40 hectares of Glasnevin Gravels, sheltered by the Teviot Range, and the vines are largely ungrafted.

The Pinot Noir is made along Burgundian lines. Fruit comes from many plots and clones, with vines over 30 years old on free-draining gravel, many on their own roots and cropped low. A share of the bunches goes into the vats whole, fermentation starts naturally, and the skins are plunged twice a day. The wine goes through natural malolactic fermentation and spends more than a year in French barriques from Burgundian coopers.

It shows raspberry, cherry and violet over dried herbs and a mineral note, with savoury red fruit, fine tannins and firm acidity. Reviewers expect it to age well.

Serve it cool rather than warm. Venison, roast pork with mushrooms, or a creamy mushroom risotto suit its savoury side.
