A Central Otago Pinot Noir with cherry and spice notes, silky tannins and vibrant acidity in a cool climate style.
CherryWarm spicePeregrine is a Central Otago wine producer established in 1998 and run by the McLachlan family. It takes its name from the karearea, New Zealand's native falcon, and the winery at Gibbston, the heart of the operation since 2003, has a design said to echo a falcon's wing.
Pinot Noir is the focus. Recent vintages have been made from Bendigo and Pisa fruit, grown on certified organic vineyards. Up to a fifth of selected parcels is fermented with whole bunches, fermentation takes place in open-top tanks, and the wine then spends 11 months in French oak barriques, a little over a fifth of them new.
The winery describes vibrant wildberry and rose petal aromatics with a touch of spice, then concentrated dark berry fruit, dried herbs and a finely structured texture. It drinks well young and will also cellar.
Serve it lightly cool rather than warm, with roast duck, lamb rump, mushroom dishes or a board of aged cheese. A young bottle opens up if you decant it for half an hour.
