The story of Mt Difficulty Roaring Meg P/G

Roaring Meg Pinot Gris is a Central Otago white from Mt Difficulty, the Bannockburn winery's more approachable second label. Pinot Gris joined the range a few years after Roaring Meg launched in 2004 with Pinot Noir and Merlot.

The fruit is hand-picked and fermented cool, and the wine comes out off-dry and medium to full in body, with a chewy, phenolic grip. The nose is jasmine, green pear and grapefruit. On the palate there is red apple, lime, yellow plum and a little lychee, and the acidity and a trace of residual sweetness give it a juicy, buoyant finish.

Pinot Gris is a mutation of Pinot Noir, with pinkish-grey skins, and it sits among the minority grapes in a region where Pinot Noir covers more than 80 per cent of plantings.

Pour it chilled with tempura prawns, a goat's cheese platter or an Asian duck salad. The touch of sweetness copes well with gentle spice.
