The story of Mt Difficulty Roaring Meg S/B

Roaring Meg Sauvignon Blanc is Mt Difficulty's Central Otago take on the grape, grown in vineyards in the Cromwell Basin. It sits at the ripe, tropical end of the style, with guava, passionfruit and pineapple, fresh herbal notes, a juicy middle and a mineral, saline finish.

Like most New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, it is handled reductively, kept away from oxygen to protect the aromatics. Central Otago adds its own character, because it lies far from the coast behind high ranges, which brings hot, dry summers and hard winters.

The label takes its name from Roaring Meg, on the Kawarau River. In 1853 the chiefs Reko and Kaikōura showed the explorer Nathanael Chalmers a natural rock bridge there, then the only place the river could be crossed, and gold miners later used the same crossing.

Serve it well chilled. The acidity and salty finish are built for Bluff oysters, steamed mussels and grilled fish, and it also works with a goat's cheese salad.
