The story of Rua Pinot Noir

Rua Pinot Noir is a Central Otago red made from fruit grown on the Skeggs family's own vineyards in Bannockburn and Pisa. The family were among the first to buy and plant land in the region, in the mid-1990s, and they now farm six vineyards across the two sub-regions.

The sites differ. The Bannockburn vines sit on a north-west-facing glacial terrace at around 270 metres, while the Pisa vines grow on a flat river terrace at around 205 metres, both over schist.

In the winery the fruit is cold-soaked for several days, plunged twice a day, then left on its skins for about a month to build a fine tannic backbone. Part of the wine goes into new oak barrels and the rest stays in stainless steel to keep it fresh. The result is black cherry, raspberry and plum, with vanilla, dried herbs and a little spice, and silky tannins that finish smooth.

Roast duck suits it, as does lamb rump with rosemary or a mushroom and thyme tart. Pour it just below room temperature.
