Ruffino is a Tuscan wine house, founded in 1877 in Pontassieve, near Florence, by the cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino. The Folonari family of Brescia bought it in 1913, and it still makes its name mostly from Tuscan estates, so a pink Prosecco from the Veneto grape Glera is a newer chapter.
Prosecco rosé is a young category. It has only been permitted since 2020, when the rules allowed a spumante rosé made from Glera blended with 10 to 15 per cent Pinot Nero, and that red grape is what turns the wine pink. Most Prosecco DOC is made in large stainless steel tanks rather than in the bottle, with a minimum production time of 30 days, which keeps the fruit bright instead of toasty.
This one is light pink, with strawberry and rose petal on the nose and a delicate red berry character on the palate. The bubbles are crisp and the finish is clean. Ruffino suggests it as an aperitif or with a meal, and it goes well with soft cheeses, prosciutto and melon, or a bowl of strawberries.
