The story of Taylors Fine Ruby Port

Taylor's Fine Ruby spends around two years in large oak vats in the Taylor's cellars at Vila Nova de Gaia, the Port lodges that face Porto across the river. The house goes back to 1692, and this bottle is its youthful, red-fruited style.

Ruby Port is kept in vats rather than small casks, which limits its contact with air and lets it hold a red colour instead of turning amber the way a tawny does. The wines come from the Baixo Corgo and Cima Corgo areas of the upper Douro Valley. They are full-bodied reds that are blended once their time in vat is done, so each bottling is balanced and consistent from year to year.

The result is intense and concentrated, with blackcurrant and cherry on the nose and a full, firm palate of rich black fruit. It is ready to drink as soon as you buy it and does not need decanting.

Serve it between 16 and 18 degrees, with ripe blue-veined cheese, a bowl of berries or dark chocolate, or on its own after dinner.
