The story of Urlar Mediator P/Noir

Urlar, pronounced er-lar, is Gaelic for the earth, and the name suits an estate that has been certified organic by BioGro since 2010 and follows biodynamic practices. It sits at Gladstone in the Wairarapa, where a Scot named Angus Thomson began planting vines in 2004. The vineyard covers about 31 hectares in a single block of land.

The Mediator is a barrel selection from that estate. The Pinot Noir is picked by parcel, with each clone fermented on its own, then matured in French oak, blended and bottled without filtering.

Wairarapa Pinot Noir tends towards darker fruit and a savoury edge, with long, fine tannins, and this one follows the pattern. Expect dark cherry and plum, baking spice and a mineral, savoury streak that grows as the glass sits.

It is a structured Pinot, built for food rather than a quiet corner. Serve it around 15 degrees alongside grilled sausages, a pork shoulder or a tray of roasted mushrooms.
