The story of Villa Maria PB S/Blanc

Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc is a Marlborough white that blends fruit from the Wairau and Awatere valleys, and Villa Maria calls it the Sauvignon Blanc that put the winery on the world map. The company makes wine from bases in Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Marlborough and Auckland, and also runs a cellar door in a Marlborough vineyard.

The two valleys pull in different directions, which is the point of blending them. The Awatere is cool, influenced by Mt Tapuae-o-uenuku, alpine winds and sea breezes that protect natural acidity, and it brings lemongrass, lime, jalapeño and fresh herbs. The Wairau is warmer in summer and gives riper citrus, grapefruit and tropical fruit. Together they make a wine that is room-filling on the nose and strikingly crisp on the palate, with a juicy, fruity finish. It is sealed under screwcap.

Villa Maria suggests serving it at around 8°C. Fish and shellfish are the natural partners, the herbal side matches salads, and the winery pairs it with steamed mussels cooked with lemongrass and chilli.
