The story of Klipdrift Export Brandy
Klipdrift brandy was created by Kosie Marais on the family farm Klipdrift, near Robertson in South Africa. He inherited the farm in 1922, and while his neighbours made wine he saw that Chenin blanc and Colombard grapes were ideal for brandy. He made his first brandy in 1938.
At first he sold it straight from the distillery. As demand grew he named it Klipdrift after the farm and added Export to the name, believing it would lend greater stature. Hotels and clubs soon wanted it. The label on the original Klipdrift Export carries a clock set at 08:02, the time legend says the first drop ran from his copper potstill.
Klipdrift is now owned by Heineken and is still made to Marais's recipe. This bottle is the Export, bottled at full strength, 43%, and matured in wood for at least three years.
The distillery also sells Klippies and Cola, a mix of Klipdrift Export and classic cola, and brandy with cola remains the classic way to drink it.
